Knowing your individual horse’s stride length is the foundation of proper ground pole workouts. Use this video to learn how to measure your horse’s stride for the perfect distance between the poles.
Pole Set Up Guide | Start Here
In this video, you’ll learn how to properly measure your horse’s stride, so you never have to guess if you’ve got the distances correct. If you don’t have an arena with sand, you can also wet your horse’s hooves and do this same method on asphalt, concrete, or any other surface that will show hoofmarks.
Uneven Low | Walk
Walking over ground poles with alternating raised ends encourages your horse to engage their core, lift through the back, and activate the entire topline for improved strength, balance, and body awareness.
This is one of my favorite exercises, building on walking poles by raising alternating sides off the ground. It engages the horse’s core muscles and requires greater flexion and extension in the shoulder, hip, and stifle joints. This workout promotes body symmetry and mental engagement as the horse adjusts their balance and pays attention to footfalls.
Go over the poles 3-5 times in each direction, 2-3 times per week. Consistent moderate exercise is better than short, intense bursts.
Even & Uneven Combo | Walk
The Even & Uneven Combo challenges your horse’s topline by encouraging spinal articulation, core engagement, and lifted movement through varying heights and footfalls!
This is one of my go-to workouts for an effective setup that develops multiple muscles simultaneously. It’s great for cross-training if trails aren’t available, as it mimics navigating logs and uneven ground. It’s ideal for young horses learning body awareness and develops the core, topline, and hind end.
For best results, trot over the poles 3-5 times in each direction, 2-3 times a week.
